We are holding your teeth hostage

The note was in clumsy printing on a scrap of paper pinned to his lapel: “We are holding your teeth hostage.” I never learned the reason.

He had hardly any money, so they, simple men, hadn’t asked for more than they reasonably thought he could pay.

I bargained for half that, so they posted his lower plate in a plain brown box, anonymously.
